Running Through a Fulfilled Life

Life Lately

Oh my goodness, I’ve been on a bit of a blogging hiatus lately.  It was totally unintended, but the month of May has been nothing short of craziness.  Since running GCM, I’ve still been running, but my training has kind of been a free for all–no focus, just a “hey, i think today I’ll do this” kind of strategy.  It’s something I needed, as sticking to a specific plan for over 3 months took a lot out of me by race day (as did the pasta Montezuma’s Revenge).  I like to have flexibility; with work-outs, work, family, and life in general.  And I feel like I’m back to that.  Yes, I have more running goals I’d like to hit for this year, but I’ve got plenty of time–the big one, to PR the crap out of GCM, has been taken off the table and I’m satisfied.

So what have I been up to?

Well, I’ve run 2 races since GCM.  First up, I did the Huron Lighthouse 5K on a whim back on May 2nd.  It was the weekend after GCM and conveniently also my first run after taking an entire week off.  Since the course pretty much was a half mile away from my house, I figured I should get a baseline for my 5K fitness.  The course was an out and back and I lost sight of the other 2 females ahead of me pretty quickly, my legs felt like poop by mile 2, and I was a little mentally spent from the previous weekend.  Still was able to clock a 21:47 and finished 3rd OA, 1st in AG.  Baby J and Hubs even strollered on over to watch me finish.

The next few weekends were taken up by some super awesome family fun times.  I had been marking May 23rd on my calendar for quite some time, as it was the day that my brother was getting married.  Geoff and Haley couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day, the weather was absolutely beautiful to complement the overall feel of the day.  The weekend flew by and I still feel blessed that my little family (me, hubs, and baby j), were able to stand up at the front of the church as they said their vows.

Hubs and I also decided to rehash our college hey-day and watch Third Eye Blind and Dashboard Confessional in concert on May 29.  Dashboard was and still is one of my favorite bands, so I was more than happy to play Emo Mantooth for one glorious night of manliner, tight jeans, and lyrics that pierce your soul.

The second race I did was The Lions Run 10K on May 30.  It was another spur of the moment, fly by the seat of your pantaloons, kind of decision.  Except for once, it wasn’t me making that decision.  Hubs asked if I wanted to be his 10K relay partner, bringing Team Mason out of retirement, as his first race since his recent surgery.  Of course, no one ever has to twist my leg to make me run anything.  So we did.  Hubs ran the first 3 miles and tagged off to me to finish out the remaining 3.2.  We wound up capturing 2nd overall.  Even with the heat and high humidity, I was able to maintain a 7:04/mile pace.  Even if I did feel like I wanted to melt, blow chunks, and pass out as soon as I crossed the finish line.

So that’s where and what I’ve been up to over the past month.  I’m hoping to get back to blogging more regularly from here on out, as sometimes it’s just nice to step back and remember to breathe.  And everything will be ok.

  1. Great job in the 5K just a week after your half! All the pics are good and you look really strong (thanks for not racing in that smiley face race shirt, at least I am guessing that’s the race shirt since so many people in pics have it on).

I’m really jealous of your concert! 3eb and Dashboard are awesome! I love that kind of music and wish alternative rock was as good now…
